On May 21, 2009, AVKO debuted the DVD version of its popular Sequential Spelling series, starting with Sequential Spelling 1; levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are currently available

The DVD version of Sequential Spelling is manufactured and was developed by a homeschooling brother-sister duo: LeeAnn Earl and Joe Hipps of Instructional Media Innovations (IMI).  Levels 6-7 will be released over the course of the next two years or so.  Release updates will continue to be posted on the AVKO website and Instructional Media Innovations' website.

This automated version of Sequential Spelling is comparable to the book version, with some notable differences.  Though the program can be used as-is, it is recommended that the DVD be bought in a bundle with the teacher's book of Sequential Spelling and the Student Response Book for Sequential Spelling.

  • The students can learn spelling on their own, with minimal assistance from the teacher, while still getting the benefits of AVKO's multi-sensory system.
  • Each word presented in the series is pronounced, used in a contextual sentence, and then pronounced again.  You won't have to think of our own sentences anymore or look them up in AVKO's Word Families in Sentence Context.
  • Young children can use the program (as long as they can pause and re-start the DVD playing program on your computer).  A reading or spelling ability of about 2nd grade is necessary to use Sequential Spelling effectively (a child's ability to use the computer-based version of Sequential Spelling is up to the discretion of the instructor).
  • After the student attempts the spelling of each word, the word is displayed on the screen, with the word families, prefixes, suffixes, and consonant blends in contrasting colors for easy processing of the word family's pattern
  • Each lesson has a "Check List" that the teacher can use to review the student's work for the day -- even without purchasing a copy of the book.
  • Videos can be downloaded onto your iPod/iPad for mobile access to your spelling lessons. Videos are presented in .mp4 format, a universal video format played by most video players.

Recommended Accessories:

  • AVKO Membership for all of the supplemental curriculum resources, including Word Families in Sentence Context, The Patterns of English Spelling, additional readings for comprehension, supplemental worksheets and games, Mp3 recordings of AVKO Workshops, and more!
  • Sequential Spelling (Teacher's book; available separately or in a bundle with the DVD)
Though the program can be used without the teacher's book, the book includes some information that the DVD does not, including page references to The Patterns of English Spelling and bolding of the most important words to be learned for competency and fluency.  Additionally, in case of travel or machine malfunction, the book will provide you with the ability to maintain continuity and not miss lessons.
  • Student Response Book for Sequential Spelling (available separately or in a bundle with the DVD).
Your student's work will be organized neatly in this handy book that prevents him from seeing the previous days' while working on the present day's.
